Rotary Stories
The Spirit of the Fourth Parade was extra special this year for our having Marni Von Wilpert as Grand Marshal, and also Kim Varey as our 2025-2026 Club President atop Mike Moffat's vintage Chevrolet Corvette. The day was filled with lots of fun, including the morning car show with Alison and Mark Farin bringing out their Plymouth Road Runner. On this special day, we extend thanks and joyfully celebrate our Independence Day.

Last Saturday night's demotion party included recognitions of key individuals who have a made a difference for our Club and a "passing of the gavel" (along with this awesome relic of the past) from Bob Davie to Kim Varey as incoming Club President, 2025-2026. Please visit the club's facebook page for more fun photos of the Disco Bob themed event. One thing is for certain: we do know how to party! https://www.facebook.com/groups/247469753192

Saturday night's celebration included the induction of Kim Varey as our Club's 2025-2026 President, and the special recognition of Trudy Armstrong as Rotary International Service Above Self Award recipient! Such a great evening filled with fun, camaraderie, and joy for so many projects accomplished this year. WOW!

Our club members helped recognize our fallen heroes by setting American flags on their graves, honoring their ultimate sacrifice for our country's freedom. A solemn day, filled with remembrances.

Visit by Supervisor Joel Anderson brings club recognition!

It was so nice to be recognized by Supervisor Andersen for our club's long community service! Thank you, sir, and for your long-standing support of our annual Rancho BEERnardo Festival through the Community Enhancement grant.

How wonderful to support Solutions for Change!

Jason Ventetualo was presented with a generous grant by President Bob Davie and Service Chair, Elizabeth Engleberg to help support the vitally needed programs and services delivered by this organization. Great presentation that morning on the very complex issues of homelessness. The proceeds from our Rancho BEERnardo event are making a difference!

How wonderful to see the Rotary Float in the Tournament of Roses Parade this morning!
Wishing you and yours a wonderful new year filled with peace, comradery, fun and community service.

You can start the holiday season on a charitable note by donating to the Rotary International Foundation on Giving Tuesday this December 3rd.

Why should Rotary be your charity of choice? Because our 1.2 million members see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to extend deep appreciation to the Club Members, Volunteers, and generous Sponsors
who help make an important difference for our community every day. You are our "Rotary Family" and while we may not
be at the table with you the day of, we do extend gratitude for the gift of having you in our lives this holiday celebrates.

Pssst - don't forget we are "dark" on Tuesday, 11/26.

Thanking our wonderful Rancho BEERnardo Festival's Honorary Chairs, Kevin and Karen Ogden, shown here cutting the
ribbon to open the Tasting Trail for VIP attendees. Our sincere gratitude extends to our wonderful sponsors as well. The event's
success means generous grants will be generated from our Club, supporting our local community and region, as well as Rotary
International's highest and most urgent needs for humanitarian relief, programs, and services.

The Rancho BEERnardo Festival Planning Committee would like to thank
and recognize our generous 2024 Sponsors!

World Polio Day (24 October) was established by Rotary International to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the development of a polio vaccine (poliomyelitis). Subsequent development of an oral vaccine by Albert Sabin then led to establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988. Since then, GPEI has reduced polio worldwide by 99 percent. World Polio Day is an annual observance when members of Rotary International, along with public health advocates and individuals who are committed to a polio-free world, commemorate the success of a global campaign to fully eradicate polio.

Big *SHOUT-OUT* to the volunteers who represented our Club this weekend at RB Alive!

Our new tent/booth looks amazing, showcasing to our community all the many things we have to offer as Rotarians. Big PLUS having the giant BEERnardo signage as well. Big ol' tip of the hat to Mary Stanton for leading our revitalized presence at our own and local events.

Membership Month! When you introduce a friend or colleague to Rotary, you are introducing them to a world where volunteerism can make positive changes in our community and beyond (along with plenty of fun).

We are friends, and we are family. Rancho Bernardo Sunrise
Rotary Club "celebrates" the day!

Incoming Rotary President, Bob Davie, and wife, Sharyn, are driven by Mike Moffat in his classic Corvette, celebrating the Spirit of the Fourth. Such a wonderful parade each year that brings together families, companies, volunteers and service groups to take part in a patriotic day for all living in Rancho Bernardo and region wide.

Excited to announce the Club's most recent grant in support of San Diego Oasis' program Bridging the Digital Divide for Older Adults and Seniors. After researching challenging issues and recognizing that technology and training were one of the most pressing needs for older adults/seniors, San Diego Oasis created a pilot program to directly confront both the lack of tools and ongoing training. After identifying an older, low-income audience who were struggling with little or no technology access or ability, they created a technology package with the help of several funders. They are able to provide a Samsung tablet, 12 months of internet, an hour of one-on-one training in small groups, plus vouchers to access ongoing classes. The program has helped to encourage greater connectivity with family, reduced isolation, lessened depression, stimulated new learning, and given individuals a renewed sense of purposeTo learn more and/or support this wonderful program more directly, please contact David@SanDiegoOasis.org.

One of our club members totally *rocked* her recent State of the District speech. Sunrise club members came out to Oasis this past Tuesday night to support Marni von Wilpert as she delivered her State of the District. The room was packed with more than 200 community-invested individuals, the food was delicious, and our Sunrise club was part of the pre-speech reception gathering with an information table. Well done, Marni!
Club Members did some "leaping" at Chicken Charlies, joined by Don Glover and a variety of other guests. The food was delicious! Thanks to Bret for arranging this social to show our great appreciation to Charlie, one our BEERnardo food vendors. Didn't get enough of the ribs or fried chicken? Pretty sure another visit for a full-on dinner of tasty menu choices can take care of that.

Long time club member, Sue Herndon, was celebrated Saturday, February 17, recognizing her beautiful life and giving ways.
Happy to recognize and celebrate this wonderful team of dedicated professionals and volunteers who gather together through Thousand Smiles to help change the lives of youngsters with cleft palates. RB Sunrise has been a long-time supporter of this amazing organization, and we applaud your efforts!
Dixie, a Norwegian Fjord Horse, can be found at the Ride Above Disability Therapeutic Riding Center (RAD) in Poway, providing a whole array of riding benefits for children and adults with disabilities. With Poway’s thriving equine community, it makes sense that RAD can be easily found in the rural area off of Garden Road, providing those with Down’s syndrome, ASD, learning or language disabilities and multiple sclerosis with lessons and equine therapy. Decades of research has proven that riding horses provides a whole host of neurological, cognitive, and physical conditioning, especially for those who require a non-weight-bearing activity.

20-year-old Dixie is often a favorite rider and staff choice, known for her sweet disposition, deep well of patience, and easy-moving gaits. However, with age comes extra care to keep her body in top condition for her riders. “Dixie provides about 20, 30-minute rides per week,” says Allie Sarnataro, Co-Foundation, Executive Director, and Program Director. “While lessons are mostly walking and trotting exercises, and such a regular routine keeps Dixie’s joints and muscles healthy, Dixie requires extra medications and treatments to help keep her in top shape.” This year, the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club will sponsor Dixie’s specialized health needs with a $4,000 grant. “Many of the club members either have owned horses or been around them in the past, so there is an understanding of how fulfilling the riding experience can be. But more than the feeling of having greater mobility atop a horse, something the kids talk for days before and after a lesson, there is something innately joyful about being with the volunteers and staff in a safe and supportive environment,” said Marty Greenwald, the Club’s current president.
President-elect Stephanie Urchick of the Rotary Club of McMurray, PA has chosen "The Magic of Rotary" as our theme for 24-25.
As business and professional leaders, we have a duty to "...Vocational service, which gives Rotarians the opportunity to help others escape poverty and lead and encourage good ethics through vocation." Carlos Frum, PDG D6440.
imageHappy Holidays!  As we approach the end of the year it’s a great time to reflect on what we have and to be grateful for all the good we have done as Rotarians during this first half of our Rotary year.  We have distributed funds for 95 District Grants and are involved in well over 70 pending and active Global Grants.  Rotarians and Rotaractors do activities every day to help reduce human suffering and make our communities a better place to live.  Continue this work to Create Hope in the World.

Your gifts to the Rotary Foundation are more than donations. They bring peace, health, literacy and opportunity to people in need. Your dedication to helping people through service and your generous support of The Rotary Foundation makes all this possible. I wish you peace for the coming holiday season and happiness in the coming year.  Thank you for all you do for our communities near and far!

Thank you,

Don Fipps
