Tech Trek is a week long science camp held at several college campuses in California and locally at UCSD. The principal goal of this program of AAUW California is to encourage young women to choose careers in science. At these camps, middle school girls are able to take intensive classes in areas such as physics, genetics, geology, computer technology, and physiology. Irene Dunny, a member of AAUW's local chapter commented, “It is very gratifying to everyone involved in Tech Trek to know that RB Sunrise Rotary has a high regard for the goals of the program and chooses to support them each year."
Past Rotary Club president Nasrin Barbee pointed out the importance of
increasing math, science and technology education across the board, but
particularly for girls. “The United States no longer holds the
pre-eminent position in education that it once did, and girls aren’t
encouraged to pursue these areas. It’s up to the people in this room to
lay the groundwork now for a strong future for the next generation. Our
helping AAUW should do JUST that!”
