(L-R) Past District Governor Fernando Favela (Baja), RB Sunrise Rotary Club president Al Watson, Past District Governor Mike Stelman, Past District Governor Bill Sturgeon, Past District Governor Jim O’Meara, Past District Governor Pam Russell, District Governor Dave Breeding, RB Sunrise Rotarian Carl Kruse, Assistant District Governor Pauline Getz, and District Governor- Elect Larry Sundram celebrated Mr. Kruse’s successful naming as District Governor for the term 2013-14.

In what would politely be called a roller coaster week, Poway City Councilman Carl Kruse turned 65, lost at the polls, and won his long-sought place in line to become Governor of Rotary District 5340. He will begin his term as District Governor starting July 1, 2013.

“This is huge” observed current District 5340 Governor Dave Breeding at the Nov 9 club meeting as the results were announced. Mr. Kruse has been interested in the District Governor’s position for several years, seeing it as a prime position for giving back to the larger community and influencing the activities of all 62 clubs within the district. District 5340 covers all of San Diego and Imperial counties.

The District Governor position is key to coordinating within and among local clubs. Over the next four years, Kruse will play an increasingly significant role within the District 5340 administration by enhancing their effectiveness within Rotary’s Four Avenues of Service-Club, Vocational, Community, and International.

With a vehicle license reading SERVIZ, in keeping with Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self”, Mr. Kruse is a 16-plus year Rotarian who lives his life by the motto “Rotary is a Journey, Not a Destination”.

Leading up to this honor, Carl has held a significant number of positions within the Rotary structure, including club president, Assistant District Governor, Chief of Staff, District Membership Chair, and Club Foundation Liaison. His travels on behalf of Rotary have taken him to India, Denmark, and other points on the map too numerous to mention.

Known within the club as “The man who can’t say no”, Carl Kruse is the very epitome of the community-minded spirit and willingness to volunteer that all RB Sunrise Rotarians try to emulate. He earned the prestigious Rotary Presidential Citation in 2007 and was named Rotarian of the Year in 2009. In addition, he’s been a Facilitator for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and helped a team of the region’s top eighth graders to fulfill their leadership potential at the Leadership, Ethics and Determination conference (LEAD).

“Carl is one of those people who seems to be all places at the same time,” observes fellow Rotarian Jim Roth. “He’s been on every committee imaginable in our organization, coaching and guiding both new members and veterans alike. District 5340 is VERY luck to get him as their Governor, and we’re all incredibly proud of his accomplishment.”

hits counter “Carl has played a significant role within the District 5340 administration during his 14 years in Rotary,” continued Roth, himself a past president and leader of the worldwide Rotarians at Work initiative. “Here is a man who truly lives his life according to Rotary’s Four Avenues of Service-Club, Vocational, Community, and International. He’s an inspiration to us all.”

With 1.3 million members in over 33,000 clubs worldwide, Rotary International requires a considerable regional administration to support individual club communications, membership development, successful community and international service projects, support of the The Rotary Foundation, and the development of leaders beyond the club level. International headquarters in Evanston, IL, relies on people like Carl Kruse to make things happen successfully
