Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary recently recognized three fifth grade students of  Painted Rock and Turtleback Elementary Schools for exhibiting the Rotary values of “Service Above Self.” At a recent breakfast meeting, students Rachel Plumb, Kaylee Barr and Emily Wilkes were presented with this award, based on nominations by their classmates.

The Service Above Self program started about 6 years ago at Painted Rock Elementary School, and has since expanded to include Turtleback Elementary. The purpose of the program is to encourage students to do nice things for others during school hours and on school grounds. RB Sunrise Rotary Project Coordinator Mike Miller visits the schools annually in early fall to explain the Rotary values of “Service Above Self” to all fifth grade students. Students then submit nomination forms for fellow classmates who they believe are going out of their way to do something nice for other members of the school.

Early in 2011, Rotarian Mike Miller tallied the ballots, met with the fifth grade teachers, and decided on award winners. All nominees and award winners were recognized by the Rotary Club and their peers at a ceremony at their respective school. The award recipients from the first half of this school year were then invited to attend the RB Sunrise Rotary Club’s breakfast meeting with their parents. This process will be repeated in the second half of this school year, once the fifth graders have cast the next round of ballots. It is a truly great way to recognize students for being an active member of their community, and going out of their way to help other students.
