On Sunday, October 17, 2010, three members of RB Sunrise Rotary Club awoke early to travel to the San Ysidro border crossing into Mexico.  After crossing the border, Paul Gorman, Rex Teets and Dr. Jim Dunny were met by Ulises Alegre of the Tijuana Milenio Minarete Rotary Club and were transported to the Colegio Ana Maria Gomez Compos, A.C. (a Catholic elementary school) in a colonia or poor neighborhood of Tijuana.

The weather was overcast and it drizzled for most of the day. The three RB Sunrise Rotarians immediately helped to set up the courtyard of the school for the health fair. This involved carrying in food supplies for the kitchen so that the volunteers could have snacks and lunch.  RB Sunrise Rotary arranged for the use of three tents that proved to be invaluable because of the wet weather.  Two tents were borrowed from San Diego Woodturners, Inc. and a third larger tent was provided by Gordon Erickson, a RB Sunrise Rotary member.  These tents were quickly erected with the help of the many volunteers at the site.  The Tijuana Milenio Minarete Rotaract club members assisted their parent Rotary club with the setup and with taking care of the children's tent for games and prized to entertain the children while other family members were being seen for various services.  One Rotaract member was also in charge of the Banati food bank booth where for a nominal charge, people could purchase a bag of food for a week's nutrition.

The fair was to start at 9 am but due to the weather, it started a little later.  The services provided after the recipients registered included screening for high blood pressure and obesity, laboratory tests to screen for diabetes, vision screening including glaucoma testing, general, gynecological, urological, pediatric and pediatric oncology consultation.  There was also a pharmacy to begin starter doses of prescribed medications.  The dental exam tent provided visual dental examinations as well as taking impressions for orthodontic appliances for children as well as preventive dental supplies and information. Dental supplies via RB Sunrise Rotary Club were provided by Henry Schein Dental, San Diego Branch.

There were also nutrition information, diabetes diet information, nutrition information, mental health information, diability program information and food bank eligibility testing and registration.  Recipients were also able to get lost or missing national health cards replaced.  Cosmetology student volunteers also provided free haircuts.

After fair closed, volunteers had to quickly take down the tents and remove all of the equipment and supplies.  Because of the large number of volunteers, this was quickly done.

The RB Sunrise Rotary Club volunteers all agreed that each of them had a very fulfilling day and enjoyed being able to participate.

Despite the weather, the health fair saw about 400 people and provided nearly 2000 services.  Already plans are underway for the Fourth Health Fair in April of 2011 at this same location.
