It is not often that the word "memorable" and District Council can be used in the same sentence, but District Council on August 12 was one of those times.

Rotarians attending District Council at the California Center for the Performing Arts, Escondido on August 12 were treated to a memorable evening of classical music performed by seven exchange student musicians.  There was a clarinetist from Bulgaria, flutists from the Netherlands and from Germany and a string quartet from  Venezuela.   These were amateur musicians, but their performances were first rate and professional in their technique, phrasing and dynamics.  These musicians obviously were among the best student musicians from their home countries. They were part of the group of 14 student musicians who have been here in San Diego for three weeks attending Rotary District 5340's MusiCamp.  MusiCamp is one of the short-term exchange programs of District 5340's International Youth Exchange. MusiCamp students were here to practice and perform with the San Diego Youth Symphony.

There was an unmentioned RB Sunrise Rotary connection to MusiCamp.  Diane Law, a member and club treasurer, is District 5340's MusiCamp Coordinator.  You haven't seen Diane at any meetings lately because she has spent countless hours making the plans for these students lodging and events.  She also spent two weeks driving these students to rehearsal and activities.  She also hosted two of the musicians.  While spending long days coordinating the events and activities of these students, Diane also needed be busy with here marketing consulting business. Rotary's success is due to the individual effort of member's like Diane who choose to take the time to be involved.

A special thank you to Diane Law for her contribution to our district, our club and to each of us who were privileged to hear these fine musicians who are the next generation of leaders in music in their home countries.  Diane is one of our club's examples of  "Service above Self".
