Special Meeting on May 23, 2017

Mrs. Rose Schindler

On Tuesday evening, May 23, 2017, we had a special evening meeting.  Our meeting room was crowded as 73 people (members, spouses and guests) gathered.  After our meal, Mrs. Rose Schindler told her story.  She told how she grew up in a very small village where the people despite not having electricity and running water, were happy.  Then came the takeover of Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Mr. Schindler spoke about how her family's life and the life of the people in the village changed.  In 1944 her family was transported to Auschwitz.  She related how she was able to escape being sent to the gas chambers.  She and 2 sisters were able to survive because they could work.  She was in a work camp when the war ended in 1945 and the camp was liberated by the Russian Army.  She and her late husband started to speak about the Holocaust only after their children were adults.  She said that her father's last words to her was that she should survive to be able to tell the world about what happened in the concentration and extermination camps.
