Our scheduled speaker is Carl DeMaio who will be giving us a politcal update for the San Diego and California. Carl is a former member of the city council for the city of San Diego and has also been a candidate for mayor and the US house of representatives.

The assignment for the Who Am I includes providing the positive thought at the beginning of the meeting and introducing guests and visiting Rotarians during the meeting.
The member assigned to Rotary Minute/ Cheer for Rotary is the assigned Greeter for that day and also is tasked with selling opportunity drawing tickets.
On Friday, September 25, Rotary International announced that Nigeria has been officially removed from the list of countries where polio is endemic. No new cases of polio involving the wild strain of the polio virus have been reported in well over a year. If no cases of polio are encountered in the next 3 years, the entire continent of Africa will be certified as being free of polio.
The two remaining countries where new polio cases involving the wild strain of the polio virus, Pakistan and Afghanistan, are making progress in polio eradication. Less than 50 cases of polio have been reported this year to date in the combined stats from these 2 countries.
Polio eradication efforts are continuing in all three countries to insure that the number of reported cases will drop to zero and that there will not be any chance of a recurrence because of pockets where the virus can make a comeback. For more

Our club is growing. In addition to the induction new member Greg Lund last week, we will be publishing a new members tomorrow. Also, we have a corporate members that has yet to be entered on our club roster.
We also several members on leave of absence. They are Bob Davie and Phil Schneider. At last Thursday's club board meeting, John Schmidt's status as Rule of 85 member was approved. (Rotary's Manual of Procedures contains a provision that when the total years of membership and the member's age total 85 or more, the member can apply to be a Rule of 85 member. A rule of 85 member is an active, dues paying, member of the club, but no longer has to maintain any attendance requirements. Other Rule of 85 members in our club are Harold Dokmon and Jeanne MacLaren.

On Sunday, Sept 27 Paul Gorman and Jim Dunny traveled to the Fresh Start office at 7920 Frost Street across from Sharp Hospital. Fress Start held a reception to thank all of the donors they have. Our club's contribution in coordinating the funding for their acquisition of a surgical laser made our club a significant player.
Paul was our official spokesperson. Fresh Start is interested in scheduling a surgical weekend that would involve an opportunity for members of our club to volunteer as extra hands in the logistics. I am sure that Paul will be scheduling a speaker to let us know more about Frest Start and how our club can have a hands on project.
Month End Business
Our Tuesday, Sept 29th meeting will mark the end of another Rotary month. I am having to catch up of recording all of the information about makeups, new members, and attendnace since the beginning of this Rotary year. If you have gone to another club to do a makeup or you have done a makeup online at one of the eclubs, you need to supply the following inforomation in order for me to be able to enter the information into our ClubRunner database. The date of the missed meeting, the date of the makeup and the name of the club visited - either in person or online. (A makeup can only be recorded within 2 weeks on either side of the date of your missed meeting.)
Please send me the information I need for any makeups you did in the last 3 months.
One feature that is built in to ClubRunner is the ability to track whether our newsletter, the SunRiser, is being read. The purpose of a club newsletter is to keep you, the member informed about what is happening at our club, the district and with Rotary International. Our SunRiser ebulletin, however, cannot fulfil the purpose of informing you and keeping our club well informed if the newsletter email isn't opened. I know that all of us get tons of email every day. However, the last SunRiser I published in August was only opened by half of the recipients. That means that half of you didn't read it.
I need to have not only your readership, but also your input. Our club needs to publish more about what is happening in our various committees. The fact is that if we don't write down what we are doing, we will soon forget about the details of what we do. It shouldn't be necessary at the end of a Rotary year for a president or president elect to have to scramble to document our achievements. Stories on our website and our newletter serve the dual function of keeping your informed and also documenting what we do. The website and newsletter serve as electronic scrapbooks. The great thing about that is that no one has to store a physical book or spend time writing and pasting photos into a notebook. However, someone still has to write the stories and attach the photos to the story. You can be an important link by just writing down things that you know and see in a committee or project and then sending that information to me for use on our website or newsletter. I can't write stories about events or projects that I know nothing about and that no one tells me about.
