Once again, our district is doing something different. Last fall we had wine tasting event.  In keeping with the fact that San Diego is also become well known for its craft breweries, the district is sponsoring this beer tasting  The number of craft breweries has grown exponentially in San Diego county. One of the most successful breweries is Stone Brewery.  Stone Brewery began in San Marcos in 1996 and then moved to their present headquarters in Escondido in 2005.  In the past year they have begun construction of breweries in Berlin, Germany and Richmond, Virginia.

Come and enjoy an opportunity to taste the products of our regions most successful brewery at one of their Bistro locations outside Escondido. As members of RB Sunrise Rotary Club, you have an additional incentive to attend this dinner meeting. As Jeanne MacLaren and Kim Muslusky, co-chairs of this event,  have indicated in an email you received during the last week, if you attend this dinner, RB Sunrise will cover one half of the cost of the member's registration which is $55.00.  That means you get to go to a beer tasting event, get a free tour of the brewery and then a great meal for only $27.50!

Last Week's Meeting

Last week, President Alison present one of her official club assemblies. Our club is moving forward and we are adding new members regularly (see story below.)   Because of the success of our major fundraising event in October, we are able to better support the Rancho Bernardo community and take advantage of opportunities like doing an second house build later this year.

Membership

So far this year we have been very successful in adding new members.  Despite losing members to change of address like Paul Sullivan and Mike Miller, we have been growing.  At last week's meeting we inducted 2 new members, Rosemarie Bergdahl and Paul Pintek.  In February, Dale Long, who is transferring from the Encinitas Rotary Club because he no longer works in Encinitas and lives in RB will be joining our club.

2 other new members will also be added in the next month.  Ryan Ross, one of the ministers at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, has submitted an application and will be joining us soon.  Blake Gallion, a financial advisior, who works in Mission Valley and is a long time resident of RB, has visited once and indicated that he wants to join our club as well.  Recently Bob Davie ended his LOA and Phil Schneider is scheduled to end his LOA in February.  Rob Weinberg, despite going on LOA recently, contributed the story that appeared in last week's Sunriser about the program that he and Paul Gorman have put together to help club use their DDF (District Designated Funds) for projects by partnering with RB Sunrise and a funding source that Paul has cultivated.

Our club is not only a fun club, we are also leaders in finding ways to make projects happen.  The new members that we are attracting are giving us renewed energy to continue to do well what Rotary does - Change Lives.

Sole Effects

As mentioned above, our fundraising success has made it possible to take advantage of opportunities to help innovative charities who seek to make a difference in our community. Craig Brown, our president-elect has introduced and organization called Sole Effects.

This organization has made a grant request to our club for  $500 and the request was approved at last Thursday's RB Sunrise Board of Directors meeting.  Karen Ogden is the founder of this foundation. A program of Sole Effects is called the SWITCH program. This program champions student leadership by having older students mentoring and coaching the younger classes as they make their way up through the grade levels.  Team building, Identity building, Peer Pressure education and many other skills are the goals of this program and our donation will help with supplies, videographer costs, and related costs with building momentum for this. Karen is excited as I think she is starting to feel the embrace of a community recognizing the value of peer to peer leadership in the schools.

Karen has committed to coming to our club meeting on the 2nd of February to receive her check.  She has also asked for our club’s logo to put on the tee shirts and banners to thank us for this donation.
