Next Saturday, July 26, 2014, District 5340 is hosting a Membership Seminar at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley. This seminar is being supplied by speakers coming to us from our leadership at the Zone level. Since Membership is everyone's responsibility, it is essential that our club have as many persons as possible attend this seminar.
I am signed up for this seminar because of the information I learned when I attended the breakout sesssions at the recent Rotary International Convention in Sydney, Australia. The topics that will be covered at this seminar are ones that all members of our club need to understand about how to attract and retain members of the next generation - to so-called "Millennials". Rotary International has realized that the future of Rotary is dependent on recruiting members who are less than 45 years old. In looking a demographic data about Rotary Clubs, RI realized that far too few member are younger than 45 years old. It is for that reason that Rotary is taking concrete steps to create an updated image. In order for that effort to be successful, the ideas that are involved have to be understood at the member level. The bad news is that we have too few younger members. The good news is that this age group is actually looking for the very kind of socially concious involvement in making the world a better place. It is our job to make sure that they know that 1) Rotary has what they are looking for and 2) The are welcome to join us.
Come and learn what is necessary to make our club successful in the years ahead. P.S. The concepts that will be discussed are directly applicable to your business as well! To register for this seminar go to: www.rotary5340.org and click on the item on the calendar on the left side of the home page.
Next Saturday, July 26, the International Youth Symphony will be in concert at the California Center for the Performing Arts in Escondido. The International Youth Symphony is composed of outstanding musicians who are here as participants in a special Rotary Youth Exchange in collaboration with the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory. These musicians travel from many countries around the world to have the privilege to come here and learn and perform. The District 5340 Rotary MusiCamp and International Youth Symphony is now in its tenth year. The MusiCamp is unusual in that it is the only one which sponsored by a nonmunical organization. These highly talented musicians are nearly professionals in ability.
The International Youth Symphony Concert is a Rotary Only event. The reception and concert is open to Rotarians and their guests. Tickets have to be purchased in advance from the San Diego Youth Symphony on their website. The total cost is $40 which includes the preconcert reception at 5:30 pm and the concert at 7:00 pm. This is a great way to attend a Rotary event and just have great music !
This is the only concert where these exceptionally talented young musicians will perform works by celebrated composers in a concert hall venue.
Excitement is building about our Rancho BEERnardo IPA Festival on September 27 at the Sike's Adobe Historic Farmstead. This event is being impacted by some incredible news concerning craft brewing of beer in San Diego and specifically in north county San Diego.
Most of you already know that San Diego has become a destination for beer lover from around the world. Brewery tours are as poplar as wine tours, San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, SeaWorld and LegoLand for the tourist dollar.
Stone Brewing Company in Escondido has just announced that they will be converting an old natural gas factory building in Berlin, Germany into a Stone Brewing Company facility complete with festival gardens and a restaurant as well as brewery and distribuition facilities. Stone Brewery is also looking for a site east of the Mississippi River to build a second larger brewing facility for their unique products.
Another brewery is opening up a second location in Poway.
All of this activity means that beer brewing is a hot topic here in San Diego. This makes it an easy topic for conversations with friends and contacts. You will probably be surprised at the interest about San Diego Craft Beer there is.
We need to translate the excitement into sponsorships, volunteers and visitors for our event. Our sponsorship contacts need to respond no later than the 29th of August. Responses before that time are encouraged because all of the information and ad logos have to be collected and the final ad pieces generated that have the sponsors logos in place. This includes the tee shirts that will be produces for this event.
