The member assigned to Who Am I is also responsible for providing the positive thought at the beginning of the meeting and introducing visiting Rotarians and guests.
The member assigned to Rotary Minute is the assigned Greeter for that day and also is tasked with selling opportunity drawing tickets.
Rancho BEERnardo 2016 was wildly successful. Our new venue was a great hit with everyone. Several vendors ran out of beer! There were very pleased. We also enjoyed good weather. Visitors came from as far away as Los Angeles thanks to the fact that the event information was published in Westways, the AAA magazine that goes to members of the Automobile Club of Southern California. Also, quite a few visitors said that they learned about our festival because of the banners on the poles around RB.
I had multiple people stop and tell me as they were leaving that they enjoyed the event and the location. Many of them had attended last year at the Sikes Adobe and they raved about Webb Park. One young woman from Los Angeles asked how she could be sure to know about our event next year!
We will have to wait for the final numbers to be tallied. However, we probably had at least 15o people buy tickets Saturday. When the funds from the walk up ticket sales are added to the fundraising total, we will be approaching $80,000 as our total!
Congratulations to everyone who worked hard in the planning for this event. The success of this event will make it easier to sell sponsorships for next year.
Please bring your ideas and comments to our meeting tomorrow. If you write your ideas, we can collect them so that we can incorporate them into next years planning.

Neal Griffin, a published author of two police detective crime novels, visited RB Sunrise Rotary Club on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. He grew up in Wisconsin and is the son of a Philosophy Professor, who questioned authority early on in life. Neal has put this traint to good use as an author. As a teen, after reading Joseph Wambaugh’s novel, The New Centurions, he decided he decided that he wanted to be a cop.
He joined the Marines when he was 19 to improve his chances of landing a job in police work. After being in the Marines for eight years, he applied to various agencies and landed a police job in Southern California. He has worked as a patrol cop, field training officer, member of SWAT, Hostage Negotiator, Narcotics Investigator, Gang Enforcement Specialist; and, Supervisor of a Homicide Unit. He has been named as Officer of the Year on two occasions during his career and he currently holds the rank of Detective Lieutenant. Neal holds a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University, San Marcos and he is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
After spending 27 years as a cop, he decided to write crime fiction novels, challenging what people think they know about police work, but in an entertaining way. He is now retired from active police work.
Neal’s first novel, Benefit of the Doubt, was published in May 2015 and went immediately to #8 on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list. It is the story of Ben Sawyer and Harlan Lee, savvy police characters, in an action-packed crime thriller.
Neal’s second book, A Voice from the Field, is the story of Detective Tia Suarez, a character he created in Benefit of the Doubt.
He creates street smart police characters with an authentic blend of courage and guile, but he pulls no punches in the portrayal of cops who have no business wearing a badge or gun. In his books, Neal tackles the serious issues that face American policing, leaving the reader with an untainted insider’s view. The 3rd Annual Jack-O-Smash 15k, 10k, 5k and the Family Fun Festival takes place Sunday, October 30, 2016 at the Sportsplex USA in Poway. Unlike Rancho BEERnardo, an adult only event, this is fun for the entire family. A driving force behind this event is Sue Herndon, a RB Sunrise Rotary member and a tireless community activist.
Jack-O-Smash Run offers 4 race distances including a 1 mile fun run, 5K, 10K and 15K. Whether you're a competitive athlete or want to run/walk for fun, you won't want to miss out on this Fall Fun Run.
The Family Fun Festival takes place immediately following the races and includes a celebrity softball game, kids fun zone, DJ, Guinness World Record Largest Plinko Board, and of course the pumpkin smashing trebuchet.
The Miramar Semper Fidelis Rotary Club is holding its Sixth AnnualPoinsettia Fundraiser. In an effort to make this event a success, we are calling upon our "Rotary Friends" in San Diego to participate.
We are selling beautiful 14.5 to 16.5-inch tall multi-bloom Holiday Red or White Poinsettia plants in 6.5-inch pots with a gold foil sleeve. If you sell a minimum of 13 boxes (104 plants), your Rotary Club/Partnering non-profit receives $24 per box. If you sell 26 boxes (208 plants), your Rotary Club/Partnering non-profit receives $32 per box.
Orders to be submitted by November 15, 2016. Completed order forms with checks or cash need to be submitted to MSFRC.
Donation: $100 per box (8 plants, one color, per box)
