Kim Varey awarded Paul Harris Fellowship
At our regular club meeting in Nov 13, Kim Varey was recognized for earning her first Paul Harris Fellowship. In addition to the Paul Harris Pin, Kim was presented with a Paul Harris certificate by Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Foundation Chair, Jeanne MacClaren.
The Rotary Foundation is the unique funding mechanism by which Rotary International is able to do so much good in the world. When a Rotary Club decides to partner with other Rotary Clubs to do projects in their community or in a foreign country, the funds needed are acquired via presenting a grant application. Clubs then partner with each other to raise the first level of funds. This initial funding is then matched by the districts of the partnering clubs for step 2. The third step is funding by the Rotary Foundation in matching the club and district funds if the project is a global grant. In this way, small contributions by individual clubs are bundled together to fund projects that make a significant impact and are sustainable.
Members are reminded that because of the way the Rotary Foundation is structured, nearly all of the money that the foundation receives in donations is used to support charitable projects locally and abroad. As Rotarians we can be proud of the fact that the Rotary Foundation has been recognized by Charity Navigator in their award of their highest rating for the 11th year in a row. Rotarians Change Lives as few other organization are able to do because of the Rotary Foundation.

The 30th Annual Rancho Bernardo Foundation Community FoundationThanksgiving Luncheon was held on Friday, Nov 16 at 11 am at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. The Foundation was established in 1988 in order to help make RB a better place to live. At this year's event $83,000 in grants were awarded to charities in Rancho Bernardo. This is an increase of $11,000 over the amount of grants awarded in 2017. RB Sunrise Rotary was well represented at this community event with 22 members and 4 spouses attending. Valley Elementary Holiday Fair
Valley Elementary Holiday Fair - Dec 1 Valley Elementary School, Bowron Road, Poway 7:00 am to noon. RB SunRise Rotary has been partnering with the PTA at Valley Elementary School for this event since 2010. Al Watson was president that year and he wanted to do something for children. Sue Herndon knew about this PTA event and suggested that we partner with them. This is now the ninth year that we have helped with this event.
Club Holiday Party
Our holiday party this year will be held on Sunday, December 9, at 4:30 pm at Craig Brown's home. Watch your email inbox for information on what you can bring to this potluck event. You will also want to bring an unwrapped item to be auctioned off. As is our club tradition, the auction bidding starts with the items being displayed for a silent auction. After dinner, everyone then gathers for a spirited auction led by Pres. Mike Moffat. This year, Mike will be assisted by both of his elves, Cark Kruse and Jim Roth. This auction is always a fun time because of the hijinks and bantering during the auction.
Rotary International Assembly Hosting
In January, our club again will again hosting a dinner for the incoming district governors who will be attending the Rotary International Assembly training in San Diego. This year's hosting event will be on Wednesday evening, Jan 16, 2019. Be sure to save this date. Our club's event has always been a great way to learn what other Rotarians do in their district in the world. What has been memorable at past events is how the Rotary Motto of Service Above Self plays out in each district whose District Governor Elects we host each year.
We will be using the same caterer, but we will be at a different venue. This dinner has always been a special event for our club because we get to learn about what other districts around the world are doing and see that Service Above Self is a universal commitment in the world of Rotary.
