There is no meeting at the Country Club of RB. In lieu of a meeting on July 5, we are having a Club Social at Casa Brown with a potluck format. This is not a formal event with us likely hanging out on the back patio eating and drinking for an hour while talking about issues of the day. Obviously a casual event and one you could bring your spouse and know it will be a good time for both of you.
We will make it potluck and ask you to bring an appetizer or main entre if so inclined or alternatively please bring a desert to share that evening. Alison tells me that this will sort itself out in terms of what category to assign….
Bring a bottle of wine, a beer if you like and we will provide the water, soft drinks and utensils.

On June 28, 2016, RB Sunrise Rotary presented a $1,000 check to Irene Dunny, Co-President of the Rancho Bernardo branch of AAUW, and Pat Armstrong, the Tech Trek Coordinator, to support scholarships given to young women to attend Tech Trek camp.
Tech Trek is a science and math camp designed to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence in young women who will enter the eighth grade in the fall. It features hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) All of the girls attend Tech Trek camps on scholarships provided by AAUW California branch members via fundraising.
Irene Dunny first spoke about the main goals of Tech Trek, which is to educate and encourage girls to go into the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math fields. Tech Trek Science Camp began here in California about 20 years ago. Because of the demonstated success of the Tech Trek camps, the camps are not not only on eight campuses in California, but also on 11 other campuses around the United States.
Pat Armstrong then spoke about the program, impressing both Qualcomm and ViaSat to host students at their companies,. This demonstrates how well the Tech Trek program is perceived in the local technology community. At ViasSat, female engineers speak to all of the students, staff and dorm counselors. At Qualcomm, the students who chose robotics as their field of interest meet with a female engineer who teaches them about robotics. While at Qualcomm, these girls then design and build a robot to that will do an assigned task.
Lauren Finch from Twin Peaks Middle School, who was accompanied by her mother, Sandy Finch, was then introduced and spoke about her seven days of class at UCSD that focused on robotics at Qualcomm. She not only gained a lot of knowledge, but had a fun experience of learning and making new friends. Katie Lawrence from Oak Valley Middle School, who was accompanied by her dad, then spoke about the many hands-on activities she participated in and noted that it was an overall educational and engaging experience. She specifically mentioned enjoying SeaCamp, a program that takes the girls onto a boat to see firsthand the creatures that are present in the ocean off La Jolla. Both girls thanked RB Sunrise Rotary Club for supporting scholarships for two lucky young women who will attend Tech Trek camp next year.
At the June 28, 2016 meeting of RB Sunrise Rotary, Michael Bardin spoke about Rotary’s Pathways to Peace program. It is designed to foster resolving world conflict. Michael is a Charter Member and Past President of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club in San Diego. For the past 15 years, Bardin has helped lead Rotary District 5340’s growing focus on peace and peace building. He co-founded the Rotary District’s Pathways to Peace initiative in 2004 and he continues to chair the District Pathways to Peace Program and Steering Committee. He was named Rotary District 5340 Rotarian of the Year in 2014.
Peace started with Rotary’s founder Paul Harris who had a long history of connections with peace efforts. Those efforts continue to this day through Rotary’s nonpolitical projects. Rotary members were involved in the formation of the United Nations. Rotary district clubs sponsor 43 teams from four countries at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice. Rotary’s vision is to maximize its role as the agent for peace and its mission is to connect service with peace. There are Rotary peace centers round the world that have masters programs where Rotarians learn to parlay their individual skills into peace development in their specialized field.
This movement is also developing a partnership of culture of peace and nonviolence with UNESCO and other organizations, including PolioPlus and the World Health Organization. The Institute for Economics and Peace in Australia developed the Global World Peace Index, a measurement device in which an index of how peaceful a place or country is relative to a metrix. Peace is about creating the conditions to prevent conflict.
Peace is not an avenue of service or a program or event. It’s a culture and it is in Rotary's DNA. The object of Rotary is Waging Peace in the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship.

One tool is a "cover letter" that you can customize by adding your contacts name and address (open and look at it!! You will see what I mean) for all your friends, family members, neighbors & business owners in the area that you are emailing or mailing the sponsorship requests to.
Other tools are two versions of the "Sponsorship Form" and event "Fact Sheet" for you - one is both documents combined into (1) 3-page document, and then in case you want to print some - the same documents are attached a two separate documents. (Just in case you lost that last email)
Our goal is to raise $75,000+ this year. That is 50% more than last year. We have more Rotarians this year than last year, and the event has growing momentum... With the event being moved to Webb Park we will be establishing a phenomenal annual event for our community. It should be easier than ever for you to bring in those Sponsors!!
Remember, the best way to get more sponsors is to ASK. In person and by phone, you never know which one of the people you interact with each day is just waiting for the opportunity to participate.

On Saturday, July 9, 2016, District 5340 is hosting a Membership Rally at the Joan Kroc Center for Peace and Justice on the campus of the University of San Diego. Check in and a continental breakfast will be from 8:30 am to 9:00 am.
This three-hour workshop is designed for club presidents, membership chairs and all Rotarians who want to see their clubs grow and thrive. It will present fresh ideas and new tools to answer these two questions:
1) What do you need to do to make local business professionals
and civic leaders say
"I need to be a part of that Rotary Club.”
2) “What do club members need to experience to say
"I’m glad I am a member of this Rotary Club.”
Here is a direct link to the registration page for this Membership Rally. RB Sunrise Rotary's policy is to pay one half of the $25 registration fee for District events. This is a good way for red badge members to fulfill a requrement to earn their blue badge. It was at last year's membership rally that the answer to the question "What is Rotary?" was introduced by Brad Howard, our zone trustee.
By now you have noticed that the design of the SunRiser has changed. The design of the Sunriser is now that same as that of NewsBits. The District 5340 website was updated on July 1 so that it places the navigation menu at the top of the page and also incorporates other new features. The new look presents a cleaner, more modern look that is designed to be attractive to a younger audience of potential members that we will want to continue to attract.
What hasn't changed is the use of stories to inform visitors to the disrict website about the activiities of the district and the clubs in the district. Over the next few weeks, I will transition our club website to a new design. I couldn't do this already because I didn't have any information on what the new district website design and content would be. Scott Carr has been working on the change to the district website for months. Because I have a guideline from what the district has done and also examples from ClubRunner of clubs and districts who are using update templates, I won't need as much time to get our website's new look in place.
I welcome your comments and suggestions. Please visit the district website and explore its features. I intend to put a rotating full width banner on our website to highlight the activites that are part of our club's identity. Included will be photos from some past projects and the logo for Rancho BEERnardo. I would like to include pictures from most of our avenues of service. If you have a favorite photo that would show an activity, please send that photo to me.
