The month of March is designated as Literacy Month whereby Rotarians are encouraged to raise awareness of literacy issues and to organize literacy projects at home and abroad.
"Basic education and literacy" is one of Rotary's six areas of focus and thus an organizational priority for clubs and Rotarians around the world. Our District 5340 clubs are encouraged to focus on educational and literacy issues during March with programs, speakers and projects addressing the educational and literacy concerns and needs of their communities.
As Paul Harris so eloquently stated, “Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.” For over 100 years, that simple message has fueled humanitarian service, promoted high ethical standards, and worked for international understanding and peace. As with anything that has become an innate part of our lives, it is easy to take that view for granted.
Through the vision of our late Past District Governor, Bob Watson, each of the members of our district have had the opportunity, since 2006, to renew our commitment to this timeless message of compassion and generosity of spirit by participating in the Rotarians At Work Day. Since that inaugural event, each of the clubs within our district has undertaken multiple community service projects. Indeed, over the years several clubs have chosen to concurrently perform two or more projects because of the diversity of their members. Many of our clubs have partnered with other clubs, and nearly all of our clubs have integrated other non-profit groups as well as Rotaract clubs and the families of club members to assist in performing projects. All in one day! This year Rotarians at Work will be on Saturday, April 26.
RB Sunrise again this year will be participating in Rotarians At Work. This year, in addition to a project at Ronald McDonald House, members also have the opportunity to participate in building a house in Tijuana with Corazon by assisting a group that building a house on April 26th.
Mark your calendars! Saturday, September 27 is the date for our Third Annual Rancho BEERnardo festival.

Plans are well underway for a great event featuring food and tastings of many of the fine craft brews from San Diego. RB Sunrise Rotary is partnering with The Urge for this event. The Urge will handle much of the publicity and will be the food supplier for the event. Because of the longer lead time for all the planning, this will be the best one yet! RB Sunrise Rotarians will all be needed for staffing booths, checkin, setup and other tasks on the day of the event.
Clear your calendar now so you can attend the District Council "Governor's Dinner" on June 24, 2014. It will be at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley. It will mark the end of Carl's year as District Governor.
RB Sunrise Rotary Club needs to have a large number of members and their spouses at this event to help Carl celebrate the success of his year as District Governor. It is at this dinner that our club will surrender the banner we have had as the home club of the district governor.
