Michael Bardin
Our program for Tuesday June 28 is Michael D. Bardin. Michael is a Charter Member and Past President of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club in San Diego. For the past 15 years, Bardin has helped lead Rotary District 5340’s growing focus on peace and peace building. He co-founded the Rotary District’s Pathways to Peace initiative in 2004 and he continues to chair the District Pathways to Peace Program and Steering Committee. He was named Rotary District 5340 Rotarian of the Year in 2014.
Bardin is chief public policy officer for Scripps Health and as such oversees Scripps’ role in the development of health care policy on federal, state and local levels. In his 30+ years with Scripps, Bardin previously headed Scripps’ public relations and marketing communications. He has a lengthy background in the public relations and public affairs business including a dozen years with Phillips-Ramsey, then San Diego's largest advertising and public relations agency, several years as a public affairs officer in the Navy and a couple of years with television station KPIX in San Francisco
Bardin is a Board or key Committee member of many San Diego area and California civic, business and community organizations. He also is active in leadership of several federal, state and local health care public policy groups. Accredited by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), Bardin is a past member of the Society's national Board of Directors. He is past chairman and board member of PRSA’s Health Academy. He has been awarded many professional and lifetime achievement awards both in health care and public relations.
Born in Berkeley, California, Bardin is a graduate of Stanford University with a BA in communication and journalism. He did postgraduate studies in radio-TV-film at San Francisco State University.

The member assigned to Who Am I is also responsible for providing the positive thought at the beginning of the meeting and introducing visiting Rotarians and guests.
The member assigned to Rotary Minute is the assigned Greeter for that day and also is tasked with selling opportunity drawing tickets.

One tool is a "cover letter" that you can customize by adding your contacts name and address (open and look at it!! You will see what I mean) for all your friends, family members, neighbors & business owners in the area that you are emailing or mailing the sponsorship requests to.
Other tools are two versions of the "Sponsorship Form" and event "Fact Sheet" for you - one is both documents combined into (1) 3-page document, and then in case you want to print some - the same documents are attached a two separate documents. (Just in case you lost that last email)
Our goal is to raise $75,000+ this year. That is 50% more than last year. We have more Rotarians this year than last year, and the event has growing momentum... With the event being moved to Webb Park we will be establishing a phenomenal annual event for our community. It should be easier than ever for you to bring in those Sponsors!!
Remember, the best way to get more sponsors is to ASK. In person and by phone, you never know which one of the people you interact with each day is just waiting for the opportunity to participate.

At Alison Farrin’s Demotion party on Friday, June 17, 2016, she promised a surprise at the following RB Sunrise Rotary breakfast meeting, and she did not disappoint. At the June 21, 2016 meeting, Alison announced she was reinstating a tradition that had lapsed in recent years. For all new babies born to members of the RB Sunrise Rotary Club, each child will receive a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition award in their name, with the $1,000 being given to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
The following four children were born in the last two years to Rotary members and will receive the Paul Harris Recognition award:
Savannah – daughter of member Jon and his wife Bree Shea
Bellamy – daughter of member Heather and her husband William Ray
Lilah – daughter of member Klint and his wife Brittany LeBlang
Grace – daughter of member Laura and her husband Robert Mello
Jon Shea missed the meeting because he was at home enjoying his new daughter and Laura was also not present for this surprise announcement.
Randy Jones, a former Cy Young award winning San Diego Padres pitcher spoke at the June 20, 2016 RB Sunrise Rotary Club meeting. With some salty language thrown in, Randy talked about the current state of the Padres club, his personal opinions about what’s happening in baseball, and how it could be changed to make for a better game. Randy also talked about the coming of the All Star game to San Diego on July 12, 2016. He was excited for the City and the fans.
Randy began by talking about Andy Green, the new manager, and hoping he will develop baseball players from within the organization by preparing the young men to be real ball players. If that happened, he noted, the Padres could be a really competitive club in the next couple of years. What he wanted was for ownership to not only build players who wanted to be competitive but also exciting to watch. Randy stated that one problem the Padres have is that when a starter gets hurt, there is no backup. The bullpen is struggling right now and they need to get people healthier to win games.
Randy told many stories of when he pitched, winning the Cy Young award, pitching by pacing himself to try and finish a game instead of just pitching through the sixth inning and having the bullpen take over. He was a pitcher, not a thrower and was taught in the old school ways. He remarked that when he would pitch an entire game, he did so by throwing fewer pitches because he was able to get batters to to hit balls that didn't get out of the infield. He said that he always wanted to finish a game he was winning and not let a bullpen pitcher come in and give up runs that would lose the game.

He feels that the radar gun changed everything in baseball. Pitchers today are overthrowing the ball. They are becoming throwers measured by how fast they throw the ball instead of changing the speed or whether they can put it over the plate. In the current state of pitching, he noted that most pitchers throw 95 pitches in a game and then look towards the bullpen to see who is warming up to relieve them.
Randy talked about the game would be a better brand of baseball if the players were given incentive contracts instead of guaranteed money like it is now. He feels that it would make the game more fun and competitive. He feels the players are making too much money right now to be motivated to win.
Randy talked about how he teaches young players to pitch by changing speeds and using the best mechanics, not just to throw.
He summed up by noting that he had a wonderful baseball career, was lucky, and enjoys being around it to this day. He still enjoys the game, watching the kids, going out to the park and having fun. He was a very entertaining speaker and we all enjoyed his remarks.

At the June 20, 2016 meeting of RB Sunrise Rotary, Rosemarie Bergdahl was presented her Blue badge and plaque for completing her Blue Badge Program.
As a new inductee, a member is given a Red identification badge. To earn a Blue badge there are tasks to complete to earn a Blue badge. The tasks included are specifically meant to expose new members to as many aspects of Rotary as possible as well as to familiarize themselves with as many club members as possible.
June 30 is the end of this Rotary year. It is also the deadline for updates to your membership information to be corrected on the Rotary International website. Rotary has transitioned in the last few years to increasing use of the digital methods for members to access and maintain their contact information. Clubs and districts no longer get paper copies of dues invoices and membership rosters. Because our club has been using ClubRunner for our club management tasks as welll as for our newsletter and website, our club membership records are very accurate. In order to maintain that accuracy, every member needs to verify the contact and other information in our club membership profile.
In the last year, we have gained many new members. Some of our members have had changes to employment or have retired. If anything in your situation has changed, please log on to our club website and verify that all of your contact and profile information is correct. In order for your club leadership to better describe our club, please also fill in any missing information such as:
1. missing birthdays
2. anniversary dates
3. a short bio - include interests
4. your sponsor
5. current phone and cell phone numbers
6. your correct email address
7. your current employer or business
8. your position title
Our club is as good as it is because we get to know each other. Help your fellow members get to know you by filling in the information in the list above (and any other information) so that we can continue to be a strong and vibrant club.
