November is Rotary Foundation Month

Karen Mortimer Recognized for Multiple Paul Harris Fellowship Gifts

l to r:Karen Mortimer, Jeanne MacLaren

At the regular club meeting on Nov 7, 2017,  Karen Mortimer received the recognition pin for Paul Harris +7 award from Jeanne MacLaren, RB Sunrise Rotary's Rotary Foundation Chair. This award means that Karen has contributed, in addition to the initial $1000 amount to become a Paul Harris Fellow, additional funds in excess of $7000.  Congratulations to Karen for her continuing support of the Rotary Foundation.  Because of the efficiency of the administration of the Rotary Foundations, Rotarians like Karen can be sure that their contributions will be used to fund projects that will make a difference in the world.

Community Thanksgiving Luncheon

The club will be dark on Tuesday, November 21.  Instead, club members are encouraged to attend the community thanksgiving luncheon at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. This luncheon allows members of all of the various community organizations in Rancho Bernardo to be together to celebrate the accomplishments of and award scholarships from the Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation.

Holiday Gift Fair

On Saturday, December 2, our club will again partner with the PTA at Valley Elementary School in Poway for their Holiday GIft and Craft Fair.  Our club arrives at 7:30 am to decorate the multipurpose room at the school and set up gift tables and a breakfast area. Our club supplies cereal and other breakfast items such as orange juice.

Every member is encouraged to sign up to assist at this event. If enough members help, you don't need to stay for the entire morning. You can come early to help set up and then leave if you have other plans.  Or you can attend later in the morning.  This is an easy and rewarding opportunity to participate in one of our club's annual events.

This will be the eighth year that our club has had this community project.  Al Watson, who was president in 2010-2011 wanted to have a project that would specifically help children during the holiday period.  Sue Herndon was aware the craft fair at Valley Elementary School in Poway and our club was able to begin the partnership.  In addition, members of our unofficial sister club in Mexico, Club Rotario Tijuana Milenio Minarete, has sent several members every year to help us.  Their help is valuable to us because Valley Elementary School has a large percentage of Hispanic children who this project is intended to help.

Our Holiday Party

Be sure to attend this year's Holiday Party on Dec 10 at Craig Brown's home.  This is always a fun social for our club.  More information will be forthcoming from Steve Sayler.

Rotary Adds 2 New Service Partners

Rotary has added two service partners that offer clubs new ways to collaborate with other organizations and strengthen their projects: Habitat for Humanity and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).

Habitat for Humanity has a long history of working with Rotarians and Rotaractors to build the types of low-cost shelters that now qualify for global grant funding under a recent Board decision.  It's also a natural fit for Rotary's approach to vocational service, which encourages members to use their professional skills to help others.
