On Saturday evening, Aug 26, 30 members, spouses and friends gathered at the beach house of Phil and Shauna Schneider in Oceanside. This social was cohosted by Phil and Schneider and Pete and Bunny Jackson. As you can see the weather was overcast at the beach so there was no opportunity so see a sunset, but this was a minor disappointment at most.
Our resident architect, Nasrin Barbee, who attended this party designed the Schneider's redo of their beach home several years ago. It was great to actually get to experience an example of Nasrin's work. Phil gave us a narrative about what he and Shauna had to do to redo this property. Nasrin's design took into account the unique conditions that are present at a beach location. This included designing the lower level so that the view would be maximized by cantilevering the upper portion out over the patio portion. Also at the beach exposed metal has to largely be eliminated because of the rapid corrosion of any exposed metal by the sea air.
The party started at 5:00 pm and the guests arrived over the next hour or so. There was ample wine, beer and sodas as well as appetizers. Later a half dozen large pizzas were delivered to supply our appetites. There were also several great salads.
After the meal there were multiple desserts and coffee to round out the party. All in all, everyone had a great time lounging to the sound of the waves breaking on the shore and having time to get to know each other.
This party is the first of many that will be sprinkled throughout the year. Our club is known for our friendliness and our socials will allow us to get to know each other better.
This year's District 5340 Rotary Foundation Seminar will be held at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts on Sept 23, 2017. The seminar will be held from 8:30 am until noon. John Goodrich, a future district governor and a past president of the Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo is the chairman of this event. The seminar will feature past grant recipients and local initiatives. Included in the programs will be local student performers with a special appearance of by recording artist Bill Jones performing on the classical guitar.
This year's seminar is entitled "People of Action" Our district foundation seminars have always been a great way for Rotarians to learn about Rotary is doing in the world. Because this year's seminar is in our own backyard, it will be easy for members of our club to attend this event. This seminar is a great way to get an Aha! moment about Rotary.
