Rancho Bernardo Rotarians dedicated several hours on Saturday to sprucing up several locations as part of the 10th annual Rotarians at Work Day.
It is a world-wide service opportunity for Rotary International, with numerous clubs doing projects on the fourth Saturday of April. The service day began in San Diego and has since spread throughout the United States and overseas.
Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club focused its efforts on two places it has helped before — the Ronald McDonald House at Rady Children’s Hospital and PoVa Therapeutic Riding Center.
Rotarian Nasrin Barbee, the club’s community service director, said at the Ronald McDonald House members painted the kitchen pantry, cleaned its shelving units and other items, re-painted stripes in its parking garage and did other maintenance tasks that were needed.
At PoVa in Poway, the Rotarians cleared brush throughout the property and did other landscaping chores, such as tree trimming.
“(Both) do great things for the community because of the type of service they provide and we want to give back to them,” she said.

A Future Speaker
One of the benefits of doing a makeup for a missed meeting by attending a meeting at another club is the opportunity to hear an interesting speaker and experience the club culture at another club. Since I needed to do a make up for the meeting I missed on April 28th, I decided to attend the RB Noon club meeting. I found out that they have inducted 11 new members this year. A recent new member was a young woman who attended the meeting with her baby !.
The speaker was an engineer who is currently working on the US government military drone project. He did a quick overview of the history of unmanned aircraft and told us interesting information about the current military drone aircraft that have changed the way that our military can engage an enemy. Drones are usefull for both surveillance and intellegence operations. Intelligence is when the drone flies over and records very high definition photos of what is there. Surveillance is when the drone remains in the area to monitor what is happening in an area of interest.
I am hopeful that this speaker can be scheduled in the future for our club. The information was interesting because the companies involved (General Atomics and Northrup Grumann) are right here in the Poway-Rancho Bernardo neighborhood.

An featured article on Rotary.org tells about how Rotary clubs in New Zealand are helping students on the third largest island of Figi group. The article explains how these clubs lauched a project to provide 70 tablet computers (
iPads) in order to give the students access to information via the internet that would otherwise be unavailable. The clubs also provided teachers who could go to FIgi and teach the students how to use the tablets.
