At our last meeting, we were entertained and informed by Emily Weinburg, daughter of Rob Weinberg. Emily is well know to our club. While she was still in high school she was very interested in Rotary. Because she visited our meetings so often, she was made an unofficial honorary member. Emily is currently in her second year of vocal musical training at Cal State Fullerton.
Emily is a mezzo soprano. She told us that she learns to sing in foreign languages by learning the words phonetically. All operatic singers learn how to do this because it is a standard method that is taught in their training. Emily said that although she isn't required to learn other languages, she is currently learning French.
Emily interspersed her comments in between her solo selections. It was a treat to hear how her voice has developed in the last 2 years. Emily said that as a result of her progress in her training, she was selected for a lead mezzo soprano role in an upcoming opera production at Cal State Fullerton. She explained that she is also very active in her sorority. This is a way for her to network for future roles. She also, in response to a question about how she plans to get roles in the future beyond her school days, replied that she is very actively networking with her teachers and others in the operatic world to get to be known. She said that this is the most important thing after being judged as being excellent in her field.
We are already looking forward to a return visit next January so that we can once again "catch up" with her progress. We have no doubt that we will hear that she is doing well because she is very focused and determined to be very organized in this pursuit of a career in opera.
