Don Willis talks about Holes For Heroes Golf Tournament

Don Willis, visitor from San Diego Downtown Rotary Club

Don Willis, Military Co-Chair, a visitor from the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club , was pressed into service to fill is as one of our speakers on Aug 2.  He talked about the Holes For Heroes Golf Tournament that raises money for veterans in need.

Don is a retired Air Force pilot who served in Viet Nam.  He hails from Ohio, has been in California for the past year, and loves San Diego.  He has worked in the financial and business planning area and also for several Fortune 500 companies.  Don retired about 10 years ago but is still an active aviator, having already flown 3 solo flights across the United States this year. He is planning to do one more cross country solo flight before the end of the year.

He shared his experience of not having much support from community resources after coming home from Viet Nam, and wanted to get involved in supporting veterans and their families.

He started out by talking about San Diego having the highest homeless rate for veterans in the United States.  To support those veterans, The San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Foundation is sponsoring The 10th Annual Holes for Heroes Golf Tournament, hoping to raise $1 million benefiting wounded heroes, their families, KIAS, veterans, and humanitarian projects.  Holes for Heroes, a non-profit organization, supports up to eleven charities for veterans, including suicide prevention, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, injuries, support for families, social activities, calming therapy, feeding and housing veterans on the street, and other smaller charities.

One of the charities, PAVE – Physicians Advocates for Vets – supports veterans by having a doctor accompany the veteran to doctor appointments at the VA.  Many of these veterans have chronic conditions and need a lot of medical services and having a medical doctor go with the veteran to the appointment makes the whole process easier and more efficient.

Pete Jackson Speaks about Team Red, White and Blue

Pete Jackson spoke at the August 2, 2016 RB Sunrise Rotary breakfast meeting regarding Team Red, White & Blue (“Team RWB”).  Team RWB is a non-profit organization that enriches the lives of American veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity.

Blayne Smith, a West Point graduate and former Army Special Forces officer with tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan, is the executive director of Team RWB.  The nonprofit has grown to include 85,000 members in 180 chapters around the country.

Five years ago, the Rancho Bernardo High School (“RBHS”) Football Program helped organize an annual event on behalf of Team RWB in order to create awareness about this organization and its cause.

Pete spoke about the upcoming RBHS Challenge Ruck For Veterans (“The RBHS Challenge”) on September 24, 2016.  The RBHS Challenge is a 6 mile “Ruck” along the 56 Freeway, starting at Carmel Creek Road/Tang Drive and ending at Westview High School parking lot.  Finding a veteran to join you on your “Ruck” was also part of The Challenge!

Pete concluded the presentation with a short video showing veterans participating in different sports activities and talking about how this organization has benefited their lives.

Rancho BEERnardo Sponsor Tools

BEERnardo Sponsorship drive is here!!

Last week, Gordy sent the Sponsorship Form and event Fact Sheet to you. Click the links below to get the Sponsorship Tools.

One tool is a "cover letter" that you can customize by adding your contacts name and address (open and look at it!! You will see what I mean) for all your friends, family members, neighbors & business owners in the area that you are emailing or mailing the sponsorship requests to.

Other tools are two versions of the "Sponsorship Form" and event "Fact Sheet" for you - one is both documents combined into (1) 3-page document, and then in case you want to print some - the same documents are attached a two separate documents. (Just in case you lost that last email)

Our goal is to raise $75,000+ this year. That is 50% more than last year. We have more Rotarians this year than last year, and the event has growing momentum... With the event being moved to Webb Park we will be establishing a phenomenal annual event for our community. It should be easier than ever for you to bring in those Sponsors!!

Remember, the best way to get more sponsors is to ASK.  In person and by phone, you never know which one of the people you interact with each day is just waiting for the opportunity to participate.

Thanks in advance - this years BEERnardo will be the best yet!!

Let us know if you can think of something that will help us all promote this event and find this years Sponsors.
