The member assigned to Who Am I is also responsible for providing the positive thought at the beginning of the meeting and introducing visiting Rotarians and guests.
The member assigned to Rotary Minute is the assigned Greeter for that day and also is tasked with selling opportunity drawing tickets.
The Rotary Foundation is turning 100, and that’s definitely something worth celebrating!
Arch Klumph’s idea for an endowment fund dedicated to “doing good in the world” planted the seed for The Rotary Foundation in 1917. Fifth grade students, David French, Sophie Wygant, and Jaedyn Williams, from Turtleback Elementary School in Rancho Bernardo, were presented with “Service Above Self” awards by Jon Shea of RB Sunrise Rotary at its May 31, 2016 meeting.
The “Service Above Self” awards were initiated over 10 years ago by former member, Mike Miller. The awards are result of each student being nominated by another student for doing something good to another student. The students actually never know what it was that led to their award. Examples of the kinds of actions that a student is reocognized by a fellow student include such things and helping a student on the playground when a student falls or being kind to a new student who might feel left out. These deserving students won their awards for similar unselfish service to their fellow students at Turtleback Elementary School. As shown above, each student’s teacher and Principal were included in the awards presentation.

At the Rotary breakfast meeting on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, RB Sunrise member, Lloyd Trilling gave a very informative and moving presentation regarding the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), a Rotary District 5340 all-expenses-paid program for juniors in high school in San Diego and Imperial Counties. The weekend camp at Idyllwild, California encourages these students to become more effective leaders when they return to high school for their senior year, motivating them to take on additional leadership roles and to find additional ways to serve.
There were between 1200-1800 applications for the prestigious camp but only space at the camp for 279 students. The camp encourages leadership skills by the students who begin the weekend as strangers. They are exposed to a diverse group of exceptional speakers, and then worki together in a “family” unit. Participants were divided into families to provide a more intimate learning and sharing experience. The "family" consistis of a Rotarian Facilitator and up to 10 students from different high schools throughout the Rotary District.
As a Rotarian Facilitator, Lloyd spoke about working with these impressive young people and the wonderful opportunity he had leading these students in their once-in-a-lifetime experience.
There were four students from Scripps Ranch High School attending the breakfast meeting receiving RYLA completion certificates. The includied Segen Ande, Jordyn Silverstone, Flynn Steele, and Kevin Liao. Each student spoke about what they took away from attending RYLA, not only in affecting how they want to serve when they return to school as seniors, but also influencing their path for future achievement.
Carl Kruze added his personal experience in being a Rotary Facilitator at RYLA, speaking about families taking nicknames from different universities. His family was named after Boston University’s The Dog Pound, with the banner to match. He spoke about the life friendships that some of these students develop and the camaraderie and closeness they achieve being with each other for only such a short period of time.
At the May 31, 2016 RB Sunrise Rotary meeting, President Alison Farrin presented Judith Tronsrue, who had been wearing a new member red identification badge, with a Member Plaque and Blue Member Badge for completing all of her required new member tasks. Congratulations Judith
The San Diego Humane Society (San Diego Humane) provides vital services to animals and people by providing necessary medical care, sheltering and adopting out animals, providing positive reinforcement training classes, investigating animal cruelty and neglect, presenting education programs for youth and adults, and many other services. San Diego Humane is a private, nonprofit organization is not affiliated with any other humane society or SPCA. It receives no government funding and is supported solely by contributions, grants, bequests, investments, proceeds from its retail store, and small fees for services.
RB Sunrise Rotary Club at its May 31, 2016 meeting provided a $1,000 grant to San Diego Humane. Katie Woolsey, Grant Officer, briefly spoke about the many different animal service programs available to the public and thanked RB Sunrise Rotary for its donation.
