Jan Jones from Elizabeth Hospice spoke to RB Sunrise Rotary Club about the ways that Elizabeth Hospice helps patients and families that are facing the end of life.  A new law in California makes it possible for patients to decide to participate in the decision to end their life with medication.

 

Jan discussed all of the parameters.  The main provision is that the patients has to still be intellectually capable of making this decision and not be clinically depressed.  The law specifies the parameters that must be met before this decision can be accessed.  The law allows physicians who are providers for this law to write a prescription to the patient.  The patient then has to have the prescription filled.  The patient then has to take the medication.  Jan said that patients who get the prescription often don't fill it, but instead have it available so that they have a sense that they can use it, if they choose.  For more information about the End of Life Option Act click the link.

 

Elizabeth Hospice provides palliative care for patients who are suffering pain due to a terminal illness.  The goal of hospice care is to make the quality of live as good as possible during the last days for these patients.  Hospice care also there to support the families of the patient.  To learn more about Elizabeth Hospice, visit their website by clicking on the link.

 

 

President-elect Paul Gorman is now at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, GA.  He has been emailing photos from the convention and also reporting on the opening plenary session. Paul and outgoing President Craig will co-host a combined board meeting on Thursday, June 22 at Brothers Provision.
