Kristin Gaspar speaks to RB Sunrise Rotary
County Supervisor for District, 3 Kristin Gaspar spoke to RB Sunrise Rotary Club on Tuesday, August 8, 2017.  After hearing about our plans for fundraising, she related her experience in having to do phone calls to get financial support for her ultimately successful campaign.  She acknowledged that having to call to ask for money was not a fun thing to do, but, as an aspiring candidate for political office, fundraising is a full time activity that occupied many hours per day.

Her style in calling was to acknowledge to the potential donor that she, too, doesn't like to get a call from someone asking for money.  She said that doing that most often allowed her to get to her message and the request for a donation.

Next she spoke about a volunteer program that her own Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Encinitas, has initiated.  It is called Home Team.  Volunteers help people whose health situation makes it impossible for them to do simple tasks such as changing a light bulb, cleaning a kitchen floor or doing gardening.  She spoke about how much of an impact doing these minor task make for the recipients.  She spoke about the fact that the County of San Diego has a program to help in much the same way as her Rotary Club.  Bret Geernaert, our Community Service chair is looking into this as something our club can do as well as something that can be made available through the Ed Brown Center.

Kristin finished her visit to our club by filling out the necessary paperwork to make a donation to Rancho BEERnardo.

All in all, her visit had a very positive impact on all of us who were privileged to hear her on Tuesday.  We could see the quality of the leadership she brings to representing Rancho Bernardo at the County of San Diego.

Background on the photo

On May 30, 2014, new Bridge history was made. More than 300 Rotary members from all over the world took over the arches of the Sydney Harbour Bridge en masse to climb for their cause - End Polio Now.  In doing so they smashed two world records on the Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Bridge, famously grey, was a kaleidoscope of colour as every Rotarian proudly waved a flag in recognition of each country or territory where Rotary operates worldwide. Yep, that’s 278 flags on top of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. It’s a new Guinness World Record and it was hard to miss the spectacular sight of it.

This climb, which recorded 340 climbers on the Bridge at once, also broke the Bridge record for the number of climbers on the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge (previously set by Oprah). On a beautiful Sydney day, people lined the famous arch of the Bridge from the summit, almost all the way down the eastern arch.

Most of the climbers came from  more than 18,000 Rotary members from over 150 countries expected to attend Rotary International’s 105th annual convention at Sydney Olympic Park on 1-4 June 2014.  To see the video about this even go to: Rotary Bridgeclimb

Personal Note:  Irene and I participated in this record smashing event. It was one of the many highlights of our visit to Sydney, Australia and the Rotary International Convention.  Jim Dunny
