Bulk Paper Supplies on Utility Cart

On Tuesday,January 28, instead of a club general meeting for a Club Assembly, club members were asked to bring school supplies to the meeting.  These school supplies were assembled by members into "grab bags" for distribution to students and faculty at Abraxas High School.  Abraxas is a continuation high school in the Poway Unified School District.  This school is designed to help students succeed who have had difficulty in their previous school.  The school supplies are needed because budget cuts have cut deeply into the ability of the school to provide needed supplies to teachers and students alike. Like teachers in other school, the teachers at Abraxas often dig into their own pocket to purchase supplies for their classrooms

During the time the club would normally use for a speaker, club members filled plastic bags with school supplies such as pens, pencils, theme books, post-it notes pads, highlighter pens and paper clips. Bob Davie had gone to most of the "big box" stores in the area to purchase supplies out of his Community Service budget. Two Staples stores were very helpful.
The Staples store in the Poway business park contributed supplies with a retail value of $1000 and the Staples store in Carmel Mt. provided supplies worth $500. Bob was able to purchase those supplies for less than $250 ! Members contributed additional school supplies with an estimated value of at least $1000.

After the bags were filled, members took them to the parking lot and loaded them into Bob's SUV.  Bob Davie, Jim Dunny and James Stewart then drove to Abraxas High School to deliver the supplies. The principle, Dave MacLeod, a faculty member and some students moved the supplies to the school's supply room.  The donation of paper supplies was particularly timely in that teachers were having students share theme books.
